Some people bake 2 cakes and then place the one on top of the other but I use my mother's method: bake the cake a day ahead, then the next day, slice it in half horizontally (use one continuous stroke). Just before serving, whip up the cream, spread thickly on bottom layer, add sliced fresh strawberries, another layer of cream and then add the top layer of the cake. yum-yum!
